Weekly advice from ‘Sister Clare’ became required reading for home carers. Moreover, at a time when women were leaving traditional jobs to work as mechanics, tractor and ambulance drivers, farm hands and anti-aircraft gunners, newspapers became adept at reminding women that their first duty was still to the home and hearth. The perceived wisdom from a columnist named Dorothy Dix, for instance, reminded women:

It is just as much a woman’s duty to make a comfortable home for a family as it is the man’s job to provide the raw materials out of which the home is made. If every young man would find out before he gets married whether the girl whom he was about to entrust his stomach and his future comfort and happiness was a good cook and an expert with a broom, about half of the domestic misery in the world would be prevented, and more homes kept intact.5
